I heard someone say recently that you can tell a lot about a person by the way they walk into a room. Some people walk into a room in such a way that says, “Here I am,” which basically means I’ve arrived and all the attention should now be pointed toward me. These are the people who tend to take over the agenda. Sometimes they are called “high maintenance” people. They can even be difficult people. They walk into a room and say, “here I am, pay attention to me, listen to me, stop everything you are doing.”
There are other people who walk into a room in such a way that sends the message, “There you are.” It is a person who brings energy into the room, focused on the people in the room; the ones who add to the conversation in a positive way. When they enter the room, it’s as though you’re the person they’ve been looking for. They are encouragers. They are the people who, when you hear their name, you smile. Or when you see their number on your cell phone, you hurry to answer it. The encouragers are the people who bring out the best in those around them.
The question is, which are you? When you enter a room, are you saying, “Here I am, pay attention to me,” or are you saying, “There you are, I want to focus attention on you?”
Think about it.
